SLEEPING ON THE JOB: BLUE BLOCKIN’

Source June 25, 2015

Welcome to the first edition of SleepSells’ “Sleeping on the Job With Matt.” In this monthly feature, Simmons Creative Director Matt Schachte will check out the hottest, and sometimes oddest, sleep tech products.

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH:

UVEX ORANGE UV EYEWEAR

These safety glasses have orange lenses that block blue light or what we commonly know as the soft light emitted from electronics like our TVs, laptops, tablets and phones, which specialists say can wreck your sleep cycle.

THE TEST:

I wore these glasses every night for a little over a week. Some nights I wore them just while I was using my phone or tablet before going to sleep. Other times I wore them around the house an hour or two before bed.

VERDICT:

Overall I thought this solution for reducing your exposure to blue light in order to get yourself ready for sleep was pretty easy. It’s hard to say if it really helped me, but it seemed easier to unwind and get to sleep. Aside from making me look like I was getting ready to cut down a tree or shoot skeet, they seemed to work pretty well.

WHO ARE THESE GOOD FOR?
Anyone who has trouble winding down or who spends time on electronics just before going to bed. These also may be a good fit for those who have to sleep during the day and are looking for a way to prepare their bodies for sleep in the daylight hours.

HOW COMFORTABLE WERE THEY TO SLEEP IN?
This product isn’t made for sleeping in but for wearing one to two hours before you hit the hay.

HOW PRICEY WERE THEY?
For under $10 the Zzz’s-to-$ ratio seems like a major plus.

WILL THEY DISTURB YOUR PARTNER?
Only if they walk in half asleep and see you glaring at your iPad through them. It is a bit of a strange look.

WHO MIGHT LIKE THESE?
Anyone who has trouble winding down and thinks it might be due to exposure to blue light, or if you have to sleep during the day and need to get your body ready.

WERE THEY EASY TO USE?
They were pretty easy to use, and about as comfortable as your biggest pair of sunglasses or safety glasses.

PROS AND CONS:

PRO: Easy to use, without a lot of fuss. Makes you look like a sleep technician, which has to be a plus.

CON: My biggest issue was how it distorts colors. It really blocks all blue, so it makes TV watching and playing games on your tablet a lot less enjoyable.

THE RATING:

I’d give this product three out of five Z’s due to the fact that I think it could work for folks who have problems winding down.
