SLEEPING ON THE JOB: TO CHILLOW OR NOT TO CHILLOW?

Source October 01, 2015

In this month’s edition of  “Sleeping on the Job,” Simmons Creative Director Matt Schachte will review the Chillow, a water-powered pillow that keeps you cool while you sleep.

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH: CHILLOW – COOL RELIEF PAD

The Chillow is a cool, soft, memory foam-like cooling pad designed to relieve hot flashes, sore muscles, sunburn and more.

THE TEST:

I slept on the Chillow a few nights, trying it both on top of and inside my pillow case to see if it added more cool comfort to my sleep. My hope was that it would keep my rather large head from overheating, as it tends to do, leading to the inevitable “pillow flip” in the middle of the night.

THE VERDICT:

WHO IS THIS GOOD FOR?

I think the Chillow is good for anyone who sleeps hot and has trouble getting comfortable enough to fall asleep. I think this product would also be great to just cool you down in general after you’ve been exposed to the hot sun or if you have a muscle ache. It is surprisingly cool to the touch once activated properly.

HOW COMFORTABLE IS IT TO SLEEP WITH?

At first the product feels a bit stiffer than your normal pillow since it is in a nylon sleeve and could be almost too cool to the touch if you are not used to it, but it feels very refreshing and calming after a few seconds. Unfortunately, due to its stiffness, it can make your face, ears, or neck sore after a while. It may be something you can get used to over several nights. For me, the cooling sensation wore off in the middle of the night and I had to chuck it to the side to get back to sleep.

HOW PRICEY IS IT?

The Chillow is about $20. Is the Z’s-to-$ ratio worth it? I’d say if you are very hot natured and need help getting comfortable when trying to fall asleep, then the $20 would be worth it to you.

WILL IT DISTURB YOUR PARTNER?

I don’t think this would disturb your partner unless the plug to the water bladder was to come loose in the night, causing water to leak all over the bed. This could cause everyone to wake up with questions. Of course, if you have a severe drooling issue, this would be normal.

WHO MIGHT LIKE THIS?

Anyone who has issues staying cool and cannot fall asleep without a fan or the air conditioning below 70 should try this to see if they get relief. At least until they fall asleep.

WAS IT EASY TO USE?

I was surprised to figure out that it takes a few hours to get the Chillow fully activated and ready to use. Filling it up with water takes about 5 minutes, and like some magic trick it absorbs over 9 cups of water into its foam core. It then takes a couple of hours to absorb the liquid, then you just give it a quick roll to get out the extra air and it’s pretty much good to go.

PROS AND CONS:

PRO: This product is incredibly cool for the first hour or so and really does what it claims to do. It’s naturally cool without having to be refrigerated and has a soft, soothing feel.

CON: The product does lose its coolness, so it didn’t solve my middle-of-the-night pillow flip issue. It is also really heavy and doesn’t relieve pressure throughout the night like your normal pillow, so you may find yourself needing to adjust it or just plain get rid of it at some point in the night.

THE RATING:

I’d give this product 2½ out of 5 Z’s due to the fact that I think it could work for folks who have problems winding down.
