Zalmon G. Simmons changed an entire industry with his decision to mass-produce woven wire mattresses.
1889
Spiral coil springs for woven mattresses were introduced. Simmons’ innovative manufacturing process dropped the price of a woven wire mattress from $12 to 95 cents, enabling everyone to sleep much more comfortably.
1900
James Marshall patented a wrapped coil spring. Because each one was made manually, the time and labor involved drove the cost so high that they could only be found on luxury liners such as the Titanic.
1925
John Franklin Gail, Simmons’ top engineer, designed a machine that would coil wire and insert it into fabric sleeves quickly and independently. Gail’s Pocketed Coil spring machine generated the unique independent Pocketed Coil design that formed the basis of the Simmons Beautyrest mattress.
1927
Eleanor Roosevelt was featured in print advertising for the Simmons Beautyrest line and collection. She continued to be an advocate through her radio show into the 1930s.
1958
Simmons became the first mattress company to introduce the king and queen size mattresses. Years later, they were featured in Life magazine and other national publications.
1977
Simmons introduced the BeautySleep® line of durable, affordable mattresses boasting a High Performance Coil System to deliver years of performance. This line was re-launched in 2009, with select models offering Visco Memory Foam, BackGuard® support and Foam Support.
1995
Simmons introduced “The Bowling Ball Mattress” advertising campaign to illustrate dramatically how the movement of one person on the mattress is less likely to disturb his or her partner on a Simmons Beautyrest bed.
1999
Simmons designed the HeavenlyBed® for Westin Hotels and Resorts®. Guests from around the world were soon experiencing the joys of sleeping on Beautyrest Pocketed Coil springs.
2000
Simmons celebrated the 75th anniversary of its Beautyrest line by introducing the first “No-Flip” mattress — an innovation that had the rest of the industry scrambling to follow.
2003
Advanced Pocketed Coil springs — triple-wrapped, high-carbon steel springs offering increased strength, motion separation, conformability and durability — were developed and launched, thus continuing a legacy of innovation from the originators of Pocketed Coil spring technology.
2005
The “Bowling Ball” ads are brought back by popular demand. Both dealers and the public applaud the return of the dramatic television commercial demonstrating the unsurpassed motion separation of the Beautyrest mattress.
2006
The famous Beautyrest mattress was made even more luxurious with the introduction of the Beautyrest Black® mattress. This line featured enhancements in opulent fabrics and foam layers as well as stronger, motion-dampening coil spring technology.
2007
Simmons takes the popular memory foam sleeping experience to new heights with the release of the ComforPedic® from Beautyrest® line. Featuring The Better Memory Foam™, the ComforPedic mattress offers consumers the perfect body-conforming combination of soft comfort and firm support.
We also introduced the Simmons® DeepSleep® line, which offered three key benefits — durability, comfort and affordability — to value-conscious consumers looking for quality sleep products.
2008
Beautyrest pioneers hybrid technology in the mattress industry with the fusion of memory foam and Pocketed Coil with the introduction of Beautyrest NxG.
2011
With a commitment to innovating Beautyrest Pocketed Coil designs for better sleep, Simmons introduced Beautyrest Smart Response® Pocketed Coil technology. These new coils offer a revolutionary shape that provides greater motion separation, conformability, individualized back support and pressure relief.
