(ATLANTA— November 3, 2014) – On Monday, October 20, Simmons Bedding Company (“Simmons”) donated 36 Beautyrest® mattress sets to Genesis Shelter, a key program of Our House Inc. (“Our House”) that provides shelter and support services for families with newborns who are experiencing homelessness.

“Simmons has long supported Our House’s mission to eradicate the cycle of homelessness in our city, and in turn, we are proud to help Genesis Shelter move one step closer to achieving this goal,” says Tony Smith, President of Simmons. “We hope these mattresses help improve the lives of the affected families these two organizations so fervently support.”

Beautyrest mattresses were delivered Monday to Genesis Shelter’s facility in downtown Atlanta. The beds will be used in the center’s 18 private rooms, available to families looking for safe and comfortable temporary lodging. Since 1994, Genesis Shelter has served 1,200 families – approximately 3,000 individuals – in Metro Atlanta. The organization offers a wide range of programs and services to families with babies under six months of age, including lodging, meal service, clothing, an on-site licensed child care center, parenting classes and comprehensive counseling services.

"A good night’s sleep is important for everyone, but for many that come through our doors, this is often a luxury that is hard to come by. These mattresses allow us to provide a better quality of life for families residing in our shelter at Genesis – we’ve already heard great feedback after the very first night!” says Tyese Lawyer, President/CEO of Our House, Inc. “Words cannot express our gratitude for the long-term support Simmons has provided Our House."

In July 2014, Genesis Shelter merged with Simmons’ longtime community partner Our House, a childcare and support center for families with young children experiencing homelessness. The merger combines the strengths and services of both Genesis Shelter and Our House to increase the organizations’ capacity to better serve homeless families in Atlanta. The organization’s two facilities totaling approximately 35,000 square feet are able to serve 140 children daily. Expanded operations will also increase support of existing early childhood education and childcare programs, as well as the expansion of the Our House job-training program for parents.

For the past seven years, Simmons has held a seat on the Board of Directors of Our House Georgia, supporting the organization’s effort to break the chains of homelessness for children and families throughout Metro Atlanta. Last November, Simmons teamed up with the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department to give Our House’s pre-K class a special tour of Atlanta Fire Station 19, the city’s oldest operating station and a prominent landmark in the Virginia Highlands neighborhood. Simmons has also been pleased to welcome several Our House children as special guests to its annual employee holiday luncheon.
